Sniper is the other free starter. It is a cliff tower. Cliff spots highlight while you are placing a cliff tower, and the range circle still has to be white.

Why is a tower missing a coin price?

Level-gate towers such as Turret, Mortar, and Mercenary Base do not list a coin price. Event towers list a map instead.

Do golden skins count as separate towers?

No. Golden perks are skins on towers you already own, and they cannot be equipped in PVP.
